988 is the three-digit U.S. crisis number that replaced the long-form National Suicide Prevention Lifeline in 2022. It connects callers to a network of 200+ local and state crisis centers, with specialty subnetworks for veterans (press 1) and Spanish speakers (press 2). The 988 Lifeline's dedicated LGBTQ+ youth option ended in July 2025, and LGBTQ+ young people can reach The Trevor Project directly.
The line is free, confidential, and does not require you to be in immediate danger of suicide to call.
